Elderly Fall Detection App and Device Based on Flutter Platform
The Project
This project aims to develop an automated fall detection device for the elderly, designed to identify sudden falls and transmit this data to a Flutter-based mobile application. Falls among older adults represent a significant public health concern, with over one in four individuals in the United States experiencing a fall annually. While many falls result in minimal long-term consequences, more than 20% lead to severe injuries, such as fractures or head trauma. Prolonged immobility following a fall can exacerbate these injuries, underscoring the need for rapid intervention. Existing solutions on the market often suffer from drawbacks, including large size, high costs, and reliance on subscription-based online services, limiting their practicality and accessibility. In contrast, this device provides an affordable, portable alternative, compact enough to be worn at the waist. It leverages a Circuit Playground Bluefruit microcontroller to monitor acceleration and movement patterns, using these metrics to detect falls. Upon detecting a fall, the device communicates this information to a mobile application via a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connection, enabling real-time alerts for caregivers or medical professionals. By facilitating immediate fall detection, this project aims to significantly reduce the complications associated with delayed medical attention following a fall.
