IINTS – The Open-Source Insulin Pump

The Project

Hi, I'm Rune — I'm 16 years old and I've had type 1 diabetes since I was a toddler. I’ve always been fascinated by the technology that keeps me alive, especially insulin pumps. That curiosity led me to create IINTS — my own open-source insulin pump, powered by a Raspberry Pi Pico, a stepper motor, and custom 3D-printed parts. I built it from scratch during CoderDojo sessions, learning everything from programming in MicroPython to machining components on a lathe. The hardest part? Getting the hardware and software to work together reliably. I went through many prototypes — some failed completely, but each one helped me improve the design. Now, IINTS can manually inject insulin by pushing a syringe using precise motor control. It has a screen and buttons for selecting dosage, and it’s completely open-source so others can learn from it, improve it, or even build their own. My dream? To see it featured one day on the official Raspberry Pi blog or in their magazine!
