Disaster Alarm System
The Project
When searching on the Internet, we can see that the methods used today for alerting on disaster situations are the sirens controlled by the local authorities. We haven’t seen an actual product that is built to complement this decades old method. Today we have alarms that functions inside the house to detect an inside fire but I haven’t seen a solution in the market that provides a low cost and integrated solution. The same applies for earthquakes. We created an integrated and low cost solution to provide an alarm in wildfire and earthquake situations and provide an alarm to the end user in time for them to execute an escape plan and save lives. We are also integrating several different methods to make sure that the information is accurate. Most important of all, I am using technologies that can function even in case of a disaster. We all know that when a disaster happens, the public services may be disrupted. For this reason, we decided not only to use renewable energy, making the solution independent of the power service but also enabling long range communication, even when the Internet and cellphone services are not operational. Even without any known readily available product in the market, we have created a complete solution with the most capable technologies. Best of all, my solution is modular as you can see on the diagram below. This means that the homeowner or the community can pick and choose the right solution for them. These independent solutions are: 1) Gas sensor module powered by renewable energy and capable of long reach with low power using the LoRa technology. 2) Vibration sensor powered by renewable energy 3) Central data management powered by renewable energy that will collect all data from different sources to better define the danger. 4) Use of satellite data from NASA to provide better determination of the threat. 5) Use of the USGS Earthquake Map and Alert System 6) Use of drone capability to have a visual of the impending danger. 7) Use of regular Internet and Cellphone services for alert broadcast. 8) Use of Meshtastic network, that can be operational without Internet and Cellphone services which is common in case of a disaster. Another important requirement I have included is that the solution can take advantage of the already existing technology that the homeowners and communities already have such as cellphones, tablets, and computers.
