VIPMOD: Vision Impaired Person's Moving Object Detector

The Project

VIPMOD - Vision Impaired Person's Moving Object Detector is a system to detect moving objects for use by the vision impaired. Almost being knocked down by an electric car prompted me to develop VIPMOD. I patented VIPMOD and I'm among Ireland's youngest patent holders. I hope to commercialise VIPMOD. I aim for VIPMOD to improve road safety for all.

I chose to make this project because...

I am vision impaired, and I was inspired to develop my project as I have difficulty seeing oncoming cars. Once, I was nearly involved in a road accident which prompted me to develop VIPMOD for safety reasons.

What I found difficult and how I worked it out

The most difficult challenge I faced was teaching myself to code. I had no knowledge of coding. It took me 4 years to teach myself, starting with Scratch and progressing to Python and Javascript. Through patience and determination I learned how to program my prototypes.

Next time, I would...

If I had more time to work on VIPMOD I would continue to develop prototype 5 (uses AI), which I'm working on currently, to improve its efficiency and functionality.
