A Consumer IoT Seismometer for Earthquake Early Warning
The Project
I designed, programmed, built, and tested a low-cost, consumer seismometer for earthquake early warning (EEW). It costs under $100 and is about the size of a Rubik's cube. It can be controlled remotely through a smartphone or computer. The device detected all earthquakes over M3.0 in the Los Angeles area. With this data, I created accurate earthquakes waveforms consistent with those of a US Geological Survey seismometer nearby. It also successfully issued earthquake alerts by sounding the onboard alarm and sending text messages to regional subscribers. This device can open great new opportunities for EEW, saving lives and reducing damages.
