Sayffer - Health-data Sharing Application for Schools

The Project

Sayffer is an app that helps schools communicate and collaborate effectively. Sayffer allows for the secure and compliant sharing of health data such as COVID cases and food allergies. For example, in the current process, a parent lets the school nurse know that their student has a food allergy through re-registration forms at the beginning of the year, and then the school nurse prints out paper flyers and distributes them to all the students in that class to give to their parents. This is a laborious process that the school nurse has to undertake at the beginning of each year. With Sayffer, the app instead allows the user to input the allergy and alert (anonymously) the parents in the class. In addition, the nurse can view the data in more detail so that, in case of an emergency, they know what allergy the student has.

I chose to make this project because...

I chose to make this project after the COVID-19 pandemic hit. My school district implemented a COVID dashboard, but administrators had to manually send notifications via email to parents. I wanted to make an app that automated this process.

What I found difficult and how I worked it out

One thing that I found difficult was integrating the different microsystems into the app. I ran into errors adding Firebase features with the Xamarin framework, and had to figure out how to work around these. It was also my first time developing a mobile application, and I learned a lot.

Next time, I would...

In the future, I hope to release the app for testing and gain more feedback about the application. I also hope to incorporate new features such as medical form scanning and OCR for recording the content in those (for athletic releases, health-related waivers, etc.)
