Kids Against Kidney Cancer

The Project

Our project is a website built BY kids FOR kids as a resource for information about Kidney Cancer. This is an educational tool with a variety of resources to help kids cope with a loved ones' cancer diagnosis. Our website features microsites including a recorded interview that we did with a patient and with a doctor. It also includes a fundraising page to fund cancer research at City of Hope Hospital and the American Cancer Society. In the future, we plan to expand the site to include an interactive children's blog and methods to get in touch with others affected by kidney cancer.

We chose to make this project because...

We chose this project because kids can be lost and confused when a parent or loved one receives a cancer diagnosis. We wanted to help kids understand what kidney cancer is, how other kids have coped with a similar situation, and to help them get connected with one another.

What we found difficult and how we worked it out

This was our first time creating a website and writing HTML code. Two of our teammates had some coding knowledge, but HTML was new for all of us. We used templates with HTML tags as a guide to write our code and a program called JSFiddle to test the code and debug it.

Next time, we would...

In the next phase of our project, we plan to expand the content on the website. This includes more interviews, an interactive blog for children to connect with others, and a gamification section to make learning about cancer more fun. Take our website: www.kidsagainstkidneycancer.com live.
