The Project

hearassist is an AI-powered accessibility system designed to help Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals better understand conversations and important environmental sounds in real time. The project was inspired by the everyday communication barriers many people face in medical, school, and public settings where sound plays a major role. hearassist combines live transcription, environmental sound detection, AI-generated summaries, and smart band notifications into one connected experience. One of the biggest challenges during development was managing the complexity of the system itself, from constant coding issues and UI redesigns to planning how features like sound recognition and wearable integration should realistically function. Through this project, I learned not only more about AI and software development, but also how important accessibility and inclusive design are in creating technology that truly helps people.
