The Project

Our online multi-regional team developed “ring,” a next-generation nurse call system designed to support dementia and acute-care patients. With this system, patients can call for help using only their eyes or voice, even if they are unable to press buttons. In addition, AI analyzes each call and sends true medical emergencies to nurses, while emotional needs such as loneliness or anxiety are connected to family videos or messages. During development, we faced many technical challenges. For example, eye-tracking accuracy changed depending on lighting conditions and face angles, and sometimes failed to respond correctly for certain patients. To improve stability, we switched from WebGazer to SEESO and later combined it with MediaPipe as a backup system. We also struggled with repeated crashes and performance issues while developing the app with Next.js. One of the hardest challenges was AI triage. We needed to carefully adjust the AI so it could correctly distinguish life-threatening emergencies from situations where patients simply wanted emotional support or someone to talk to. Our goal is not just to create a nurse call system, but to build one that also cares for patients’ feelings and human connections.
