BrightAssist - A bathroom safety device

The Project

BrightAssist is a smart bathroom safety system for independent living and senior care. It has two modules: a light-switch module that automatically turns the bathroom light on and off, and a custom mmWave LED module that detects movement and possible falls without cameras or wearables. I was inspired by how dangerous bathrooms can be for older adults because of slippery floors, hard surfaces, and poor lighting. Many existing safety tools are not ideal because cameras reduce privacy, wearables can be forgotten, and emergency buttons may not be pressed after a fall. The hardest part was making the system useful but still easy to install. The switch module had to move a real light switch without rewiring. The mmWave module also had to fit the radar sensor, ESP32, lighting, and PCB design into one compact device.
