Curva
The Project
Curva is a Curva is a smart pressure-monitoring system for scoliosis bracing that includes hardware, an app, and AI. Thin pressure sensitive conductive sheets are placed on the inside of the brace at key pressure points to measure force in real time and send pressure data to a mobile app that clinicians and families can access. This system helps facilitate better remote care for scoliosis patients and allow for more accurate decisions made by clinicians. I have personally experienced scoliosis bracing for 5 years now. I looked towards the frustrations that I had experienced while bracing. I was frustrated about the long travel distances for appointments, unreliable, discontinuous data from x-rays and appointments, and not knowing when the brace was growing too small for me. So I developed Curva, to try to eliminate some of those concerns for others. Data privacy was a concern while developing our app, which was brought up by the apple store itself when being uploaded. Since this was private medical information being stored long-term in our app, we put in a privacy statement and policy in our app. The overall idea of the policy is that we use OpenAI and Firebase Google to code our app, which will have access to some data. Also, for the sign up settings, we're only requiring a name, email, and password, to maintain confidentiality, hence it's difficult to connect the person with the data. We are also offering the option for the users to delete their data when they finish treatment.
Judge Feedback
What a wonderful concept! I really appreciate how you took your own personal experience and used it to truly find solutions for people in the same situation. Enabling users to capture real-time data of their braces is an incredible step to giving them and their caregivers insights into their situation. Bravo!
