EchoSteer: A Smart Vibration Alert System for Hearing-Impaired Drivers
The Project
EchoSteer is a smart vibration alert system that helps hearing-impaired drivers stay aware of important road sounds. It uses machine learning to detect sounds like sirens and car horns and converts them into vibration patterns that can be felt instead of heard. I was inspired by a family member who lost their hearing after brain surgery and didn’t feel confident driving anymore. That motivated me to create something that could help give them, and others like them, more confidence on the road. One of the biggest challenges was making the model accurate while still being able to run on a small device. It was also difficult to distinguish between similar sounds like traffic and car horns. This project is still in progress, but my results support my hypothesis. I believe EchoSteer has the potential to improve safety and make driving more accessible for hearing-impaired individuals.
