Smart Fan
The Project
Smart Fan is an interactive project built using Machine Learning for Kids and Scratch that responds to how you're feeling—just by reading what you type! The fan asks how you feel, and based on your response (like "hot" or "cold"), it turns on or off accordingly. We've also added Scratch code that controls the fan's speed using rotation blocks, making the fan even smarter and more dynamic. We were inspired by the growing trend of smart home devices that respond to users' needs. We wanted to create a simplified version that shows how machine learning can understand everyday language and help automate tasks in a fun and educational way. The most challenging part was training the model to recognize different ways people express temperature-related feelings. We had to include many examples—like "I’m feeling warm" or "It’s chilly"—so the fan could respond accurately no matter how the user phrased their answer. Fine-tuning the speed control in Scratch also took some creative coding.
