Smart Dustbin

The Project

Hello! My name is Ayushi, and I study in Class 9 at MGGS Dhanmandi, Udaipur, India. I have created a project using the BBC microbit, an ultrasonic sensor, and a servo motor, called “Smart Dustbin.” The idea came from something I noticed at school—many students don’t use the dustbin properly, often because they don’t want to touch the lid. So, I designed a contactless smart dustbin that automatically opens its lid when someone comes close. Here’s how it works: The ultrasonic sensor detects if a person or hand is within 10 centimeters of the dustbin. If someone is detected, the servo motor automatically opens the lid. After a short time, the lid closes again—making it easy and hygienic to use. I was inspired to build this to promote cleanliness and encourage everyone to dispose of waste more responsibly. The most difficult part was making sure the sensor responded accurately and the lid opened smoothly at just the right time. Thank you for checking out my project — I hope it inspires smart and simple solutions for a cleaner environment
