The Advanced Stop System
The Project
Our project is the Advanced Stop System. This traffic light system has very distinctive features included. The first and most notable feature of this screen is what appears to a be "screen".This screen will display any videos of local emergencies, imminent threats to life or property, AMBER alerts, and Presidential alerts. The screen will play while the light turns red, and it will turn off when the light turns green and yellow. This is because we don't want the drivers getting too focused on the screen and causing accidents. One of the things we would really like to add to our prototype are sensors near the traffic system. Our traffic light system will include sensors within a 15 to 20 mile radius that will sense any accidents, speeding cars, and emergency vehicles. When the sensors feel an accident has happened, it will immediately alert the nearest police station ASAP , ensuring that everyone can be saved as soon as possible. If the sensors feel that there is a speeding car or emergency vehicle, it will turn all the lights of all the traffic lights in its range red so that this car could pass without hurting anybody. We coded the screen with a Raspberry Pi 2B. We attached a Waveshare LCD screen to the Raspberry Pi, and that's what we used as the screen. We also used an Arduino R4 wifi to code the traffic light. I was inspired to create this project after learning about how many people go missing and our never found. It is devastating to learn about these stories, and it makes it even worse that it is almost impossible to find a missing person after a day or two. So we wanted to come up with an idea to change that.I originally thought of this idea about a year ago, while I was in the car with my mom. My mom and I were driving on the highway, when I looked up at a billboard. I thought to myself, why don't billboards play videos?I asked my mom, and she said that cars would pass too quickly on the highway to see the entire ad, so it would not be very effective. So I continued thinking about this, and I kept thinking of public areas where I could place a video billboard. Finally I came up with an ingenious idea. Why not put something close to a billboard, like a screen, on top of a traffic light system and get it to play when the light turns red? It was an amazing idea! After so much focus, dedication, and persistence, we were able to make this a reality. The most difficult part of our project was learning how to code. It was an extremely immense feat, but I was up to the challenge. I messed up so many times, I thought I would never succeed. But I didn't give up. I kept on trying. I kept going even when my parents told me to give it a rest. I kept going even when my fellow peers were telling me to quit. I now know what it means to be persistent, and what it really means not to give up. Today, I'm glad that I sacrificed so much time and commitment to my project. No matter what happens to this project, it will always be a part of me, and who I am.
