BinBuddy
The Project
BinBuddy is smart device that uses object detection to detect recyclable and non-recyclable rubbish. For the hardware, we used a Raspberry Pi 5, USB Webcam, an LCD Display and some LEDs as well as a custom 3D printed case. BinBuddy is designed to be in schools where it teaches children what items are recyclable from a young age. For the software, we coded the model in python using the basic OpenCV object detection model and we used Flask for our website. The website displays our live leaderboard system which is constantly receiving data from the Raspberry Pi as well live statistics and helpful information related to recycling. When an item is found to be recyclable a point is added to their team. We were inspired to build BinBuddy because we saw the unfortunate amount of recyclable rubbish ending up in landfill. This project tested us in many ways. For example, we found it extremely hard to meet up as a team every week as we all have busy schedules. However, we are happy to say that we overcame all of our issues together and were able to build our project BinBuddy.
