EdgeTrack
The Project
EdgeTrack is a skate analyzer that helps skaters analyze the movements of their skates on ice. EdgeTrack uses an accelerometer and gyroscope to record data based on the activity of the skate. Then using the app we created through Unity, we can upload the data and replay the skater's movements. In the skate sensor, there are four main components. The first is the QTPY ESP-32 Microcontroller, which controls the whole board. The second components are the sensors connected to the QTPY through the I2c protocol. The sensors are the accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer, which measure the acceleration forces (including gravity), sense the direction and speed (in degrees per second) of rotation, and point to the strongest magnet force (usually the magnetic North Pole), respectively. The third component is the SD card reader, which is connected to the QTPY using the SPI protocol, and it stores the data from the three sensors sent to it by the QTPY. Lastly, the battery controller and a rechargeable battery are connected to the QTPY that powers the whole device. Overall, this skate analyzer is meant to help current and aspiring figure skaters analyze their practices.
Team Comments
I chose to make this project because...I Figure Skate as a sport. When my coach is not around, it is hard to keep myself in check. Sometimes I might not be skating on the right edge or right position of the blade. Therefore, I wanted to make an app that can help skaters solve that issue.
What I found difficult and how I worked it outOne issue that we had was that the gravity was not affecting the skate correctly during the playback. The skate would fly off the screen no matter how we tried to position the device on the shoe. Eventually, we used physics equations to cancel out gravity.
Next time, I would...If I had more time, I would make the app give suggestions to the users based on the data uploaded. I would have the program analyze the moves of the skaters and give them advice on how the skaters can improve.
