Smart Irrigation System Using Rapsberry Pi

The Project

This project involves building a smart irrigation system for plants using Raspberry Pi 4, a soil moisture sensor, a 5V relay, a water pump, a breadboard, and jumper wires. The system uses the Raspberry Pi to control the water pump and detect the moisture levels in the soil. When the soil is dry, the system activates the water pump, ensuring that the plants receive the water they need. This automated system will save time and effort, while also providing the plants with the necessary amount of water for healthy growth. It's an excellent opportunity for learning about coding, automation, and electronics while also taking care of the environment.

Team Comments

I chose to make this project because...

Farmers relied on manual watering methods that were often inefficient and wasteful. They either watered their plants too much, leading to water waste and over-watered plants, or they forgot to water them, leading to under-watered plants. This not only resulted in unhealthy plants.

What I found difficult and how I worked it out

During my testing and iteration process, I encountered difficulties with the soil moisture sensor providing inaccurate results. Despite inserting the sensor into moist soil, the green light would turn on indicating moist soil, but after several troubleshooting and trials it worked.

Next time, I would...

I would like to include the following GPS and notification system using IoT based cloud platform for data collection and visualisation.
