Sleep Stopper

The Project

Sleep Stopper, a lifesaving Raspberry Pi operated device that monitors the driver’s activity and alarms them if he/ she falls asleep or doesn’t look at the road. 1 in 3 HGV drivers and 1 in 4 coach drivers reports falling asleep at the wheel while driving, and also, 1 in 25 drivers admit to falling asleep behind the wheel. Drowsy driving accounts for 328,000 crashes annually; 109,000 of those crashes resulted in an injury and about 6,400 were fatal. Sleep Stopper monitors the driver’s eyes, and, if the eyes are closed or not recognisable for 2 seconds, it emits an audible alert to awaken the driver.

I chose to make this project because...

To save lives

What I found difficult and how I worked it out

The most difficult aspect was monitoring the driver's eyes. I had to experiment with the best timings and conduct extensive research on how to prevent falling asleep. Eventually, I discovered the solution.

Next time, I would...

Yes, if I had more time, I would still design a device that would allow for the Sleep Stopper to be easily installed in any car.
