The Trash Segregator

The Project

This project makes one thing easier - segregation of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. This makes a lot of impact on the environment since the non-biodegradable waste is harmful and is often dumped, but along with that the same is done to the biodegradable waste too, but not anymore. Using a raspberry pi, a servo motor and few pieces of wood, this project was brought to life. Using machine learning technology, I trained a model with approximately 200K images to predict the type and classify the waste into the 2 types. This was done using the tensorflow python module.

Team Comments

I chose to make this project because...

I saw that in many households that no one's seperating their biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. And that was mostly because of us, we being lazy, so I decided to make the process of segregation automated.

What I found difficult and how I worked it out

Finding a perfect way to set the servo motor so that it has proper support. I figured out I needed a pan/tilt extension for the servo motor and a proper base for mounting the motor and the extension itself.

Next time, I would...

I would use a robotic arm for segregation and more training data for the machine learning process.
