Moisture Based Automatic Irrigation System

The Project

This project is moisture based automatic crop watering system. This technology could improve agriculture efficiency, promoting water conservation and reducing the environmental impacts. The objectives of this project is to avoid wastage of water and increase agriculture efficiency by using control unit base automatic plant watering system with the help of sensors (soil moisture sensor with steel nails). Biodiversity and water resources are very closely linked. Biodiversity supports water resources. Similarly, water resources are essential for biodiversity: without sufficient water species cannot survive and thereby causing biodiversity loss. Conserving biodiversity helps waterways against nitrogen pollution. In fact, streams with more species help in removing excess nutrients in water. Hence water is essential for sustaining biodiversity. The project uses a microbit, two nails, motor driver board and a water pump.

I chose to make this project because...

I choose to make this project because water is very scarce in India , Majority The objectives of this project is to avoid wastage of water and increase agriculture efficiency by using control unit base automatic plant watering system with the help of sensors (soil moisture sensor with steel nails).

What I found difficult and how I worked it out

To calibrate the moisture sensor (using iron nails) was difficult. We tried with different samples of dry and moist soil to get the accurate reading for moist and dry soil. Also it was little difficult to activate water pump using the motor driver board. After trail and error and some research.

Next time, I would...

I would add Node MCU ESP8266 to connect my project to IoT; so that the moisture, temperature and sunlight intensity data can be sent through Thingspeak and can be analysed and viewed from anywhere in the world. This would make farming convenient and would require less effort intensive.
