3D Prosthetic Hand

The Project

This is a 3D printed hand for a recipient. It uses fishing wire that acts like tendons to open/close the hand. Using OnShape and Meshmixer the 3D model was created and then printed with a Creality Ender 3 Pro.

I chose to make this project because...

I always had an interest in medicine and 3D printing and I came across this DIY prosthetic limb on youtube. I then researched to see if there was a demand for prosthetics and came across the E-Nable community. I learned so much from that community and created this hand for a real recipient.

What I found difficult and how I worked it out

I spent more time troubleshooting than anything else during this project. The 3D printing settings were extremely important as they had to be unique for each material when printing. There were also a lot of failed prints, but the experts in the community really guided me through.

Next time, I would...

I would try to add attach on pieces so the hand could be versatile in any situation. Currently, I'm designing an attach-on clip that would allow her to use a toothbrush or hairbrush while using the hand.
