The Project
.Our project, the AI-Powered Smart Traffic Light System, reimagines how traffic signals work by combining Artificial Intelligence, Computer Vision, and Arduino technology to create a smarter, faster, and more adaptive traffic system. Instead of relying on outdated fixed timers, our system uses a live camera feed and AI models to detect vehicle density in real time and automatically adjust traffic lights based on actual road conditions. It can even recognize emergency vehicles and instantly prioritize them with a green signal. The inspiration came from a problem we all experience daily — traffic jams, wasted fuel, unnecessary waiting, and delayed emergency response times. We realized that traffic systems in many cities are still static, even though traffic itself is constantly changing. That inspired us to ask a simple question: What if traffic lights could think for themselves? From there, we set out to build a low-cost, scalable solution that could make cities smarter, cleaner, and more efficient. One of the hardest parts of the project was connecting the AI software with the physical hardware in real time. Training the model to accurately detect vehicles under different lighting and traffic conditions took extensive testing. We also faced challenges in ensuring fast communication between the AI system and the Arduino-controlled traffic lights so decisions could happen instantly without delays. This project taught us that AI is not just futuristic technology — it can solve real everyday problems. Our goal is to demonstrate how intelligent systems can improve urban life, reduce environmental impact, and create safer, more efficient roads for everyone.
