NutriLens

The Project

NutriLens is an AI-powered smart glasses system that helps people better understand what they’re eating. Using a built-in camera and machine learning, it can recognize meals, estimate portion sizes, and give key nutrition information in real time. That information syncs to a mobile app, where users get simple, personalized recommendations based on their health needs, like managing diabetes or hypertension. The idea came from seeing what happened during the last government shutdown, when SNAP funding disruptions left many underserved families struggling with nutrition. Food banks were overwhelmed, and even if people may obtain enough food, those managing conditions like diabetes or hypertension are left without guidance. That made me realize that food insecurity isn’t just about access—it’s also about understanding nutrition. NutriLens is my attempt to make that understanding easier and more accessible, especially for people who can’t rely on traditional tracking apps or complicated health tools. In the development process, due to size constraints, I can only installed a Pi zero on my AI glasses. This caused implementing code and the model on the Pi more difficult, since I need to worry about the Pi's capability. Recently, I was also trying to publish the application on App Store, and I attempted and re-edited my application several times before the App Store proceeds to the next step of review.
