STOP CV

The Project

Our project, StopCV, was inspired by the growing number of self-driving cars. These cars are cool, but they are often unreliable and have trouble seeing road signs—especially ones that are dirty or vandalized, or blocked by objects in front of them like trees. That is a big safety problem! So we built a smart system that uses computer vision to help cars see stop signs more clearly. We are using a custom trained YOLOv8 model, along side with ultrasonic sensors to find traffic signs or objects and obstacles even in poor viewing conditions. One of the more challenging and difficult sections of our entire project was data gathering and finding the right dataset that we can train our AI model with. Noteworthy to mention that we had to also make a test track to find out how well the car can function. We chose Raspberry Pi 5 to run everything because it’s powerful and allows for the movement system and the AI model to be handled very well on the same device. In the end, our goal is to make self-driving cars safer for everyone on the road.
