Food For All: Smarter Donations, Stronger Meals
The Project
Food For All is a web and mobile app that empowers community shelters to plan better meals and receive more useful donations. Shelters can log their current ingredients, and the app recommends meal ideas based on what they have — while identifying missing items that donors can contribute. By connecting inventory tracking with donor visibility, the app reduces food waste and improves nutrition at shelters. Donors can see exactly what's needed and give with purpose, creating a direct bridge between community support and real-time needs. To personalize user experience, the app uses Firebase Authentication and Firestore to store roles (shelter or donor), preferences, and inventory data. Every feature is designed with shelter feedback in mind, ensuring it’s easy, fast, and effective. The idea for Food For All started after a walk through Boston Common. I saw people experiencing homelessness — bundled under blankets, alone, and unsure where their next meal would come from. It struck me that while so many of us want to help, there’s often no clear way to do so effectively. That moment stayed with me. I decided to build a tool that could make a real-world difference: not just by raising awareness, but by giving people a practical, guided way to contribute — and giving shelters the tools to feed more people with the right ingredients.
