Li-Tox-Alert
The Project
What is this project about? Li-Tox-Alert is an innovative mobile application that enables bipolar disorder patients to monitor their lithium blood concentration levels from home. By leveraging machine learning, the app predicts potential toxicity risks based on user-inputted health metrics, eliminating the need for frequent blood tests at medical facilities. What inspired it? As someone who has witnessed the challenges of lithium therapy firsthand, I was motivated by the critical need for safer, more accessible monitoring. Lithium's narrow therapeutic window means the difference between effective treatment and dangerous toxicity is often just a small dosage change. Traditional blood tests create significant burdens - from time-consuming clinic visits to accessibility barriers for mobility-limited patients. I wanted to develop a solution that puts control back in patients' hands while maintaining medical safety standards. What was difficult? Three major challenges emerged: Data scarcity: We had only 40 clinical datasets when machine learning models typically require 70+ for reliable predictions Personalization hurdles: Lithium metabolism varies significantly between individuals due to differences in body composition and sensitivity Accuracy optimization: With limited data, we had to implement advanced techniques like cross-validation to improve prediction reliability Why it matters: This project represents more than technical innovation - it's about transforming patient care. By making lithium monitoring accessible and convenient, we're reducing healthcare system burdens while empowering patients to actively participate in their treatment safety. Future development will focus on expanding our medical partnerships to enhance dataset quality and implementing transfer learning for better personalization. Technical Highlights: • Backend: Python Flask with scikit-learn models • Frontend: Cross-platform accessibility • Algorithms: Linear regression, random forests, SVMs, and neural networks Li-Tox-Alert demonstrates how technology can bridge critical gaps in mental healthcare, making life-saving treatment both safer and more manageable for patients worldwide.
