SingSense

The Project

Teen stress levels have been higher than ever, while many are either reluctant to seek help or inaccessible to mental healthcare. SingSense combines Virtual Reality (VR), singing, and real-time biometric feedback, offering a novel, entertaining method of stress relief. Putting on the fingertip-pulse-sensor and a VR headset, you dive into the immersive experience of SingSense. The sensor, connected to an Arduino board, constantly measures and calculates your heart rate variability (HRV), a stress-level indicator showcased to you real-time on an UI board in VR. In a relaxing Jazz club created using Unity Hub, you are asked to input your self-rated emotional state (happiness, energy level, etc); then, SingSense combines these values with your measured heart rate variability to recommend the best song for you to sing at the moment to relieve your stress (current internal song pool includes 15 songs of various categories). As you click “start singing” on the UI panel, 3 other panels respectively showing the lyrics, real-time biological parameters, and song information will be displayed. Now, it is your time to enjoy the unique VR singing experience of SingSense, singing the recommended song alongside applause from the audience(mannequins). My own research project concluded that singing on SingSense effectively increases one’s HRV and, thus, decreases their stress level. Not just a game for singers, SingSense is an accessible, enjoyable, and scientifically validated alternative of traditional stress-relieving mechanisms.
