RoadAlert

The Project

RoadAlert is a smart application designed to make roads safer by detecting possible dangers and warning drivers instantly. It uses a Raspberry Pi with a camera that watches the road in real time. If a hazard is detected, the system sends an alert to the driver, giving them enough time to react and avoid accidents. We are members of the CASTEM Club, where we spend our weekends working on cool and innovative ideas. We created RoadAlert because distracted driving is a big problem. Many drivers lose focus on the road when they are thinking about work, changing music, or planning to call someone back. These small distractions can lead to serious accidents. In fact, over 133,000 car accidents in the UK last year happened because drivers were not paying full attention. With RoadAlert, we want to reduce these numbers by helping drivers stay alert and aware of their surroundings. We have used Raspberry Pi 5, a webcam and Python coding to develop this application. TensorFlow helps analyse the video feed, OpenCV processes the images, and Pygame triggers an alert when a danger is detected. This means RoadAlert doesn’t just react to accidents—it prevents them from happening in the first place. Our goal is to make driving safer for everyone, whether they’re driving a personal car or managing a fleet of vehicles. With RoadAlert, we hope to make the roads a safer place for all.
