Automatic trash can

The Project

Our project is an automatic garbage can. Instead of a pedal bin, which is easy to break, I used a sensor. The basket opens by itself when it detects the hand next to the sensor. The automatic trash can opens by itself, making trash disposal easier.

We chose to make this project because...

An automatic trash can can open the lid without requiring a touch. The ultrasonic sensor can detect the movement and trigger the opening of the lid, which is hygienic and convenient. Making such a project can help us learn about Arduino programming, sensors and automation.

What we found difficult and how we worked it out

The ultrasonic sensor requires proper calibration to measure distances accurately. If not properly calibrated, it may provide incorrect readings. To overcome these difficulties, we documented ourselves very well and tested the device for a long time.

If we had more time we would have added additional functionalities such as light indicators or sound notifications, to make the trash can smarter.
