ACS: The Orientation Experience

The Project

This is an RPG-style game with an adaptation of the real-life Anglo-Chinese School (ACS) Jakarta's Orientation event. The player controls a new student entering ACS Jakarta and must take an unusual exam that tests their physical capabilities through minigames. There are two different modes: Casual and Hard. Casual Mode is targeted at newer players and has interactable, user-friendly NPC dialogues while Hard Mode does not. As the name suggests, casual mode is far more lenient in terms of gameplay.

We chose to make this project because...

As a game developer who is aspiring in game design, this is our first attempt at creating such an ambitious project that focuses on experimenting with game mechanics, an actual story, NPC dialogues, and item-equipping which altogether took a lot of time and effort to make.

What we found difficult and how we worked it out

We mainly had trouble with mainly graphical design, such as UI layering, which took a bit of a hassle to fix. Obviously, for a game this big, we also had to implement lots of code and run into a metric ton of bug fixing and playtesting.

Next time, we would...

Surprisingly, we do! Despite time constraint, we wanted to add a little bit of secrets and lore into this game. We thought of an idea called the secret "Mr. Leigh" teacher boss battle which can be prompted by a secret vending machine code.
