NanoKid

The Project

A small programable handheld that is jam packed with features to help in prototyping or having fun. The device can be used for various purposes, example: games, universal remote, connect to the internet, play music, measure acceleration, make a screaming contest device, control your computer and many other ideas which can be implemented. It has a Colour LCD, Thumbstick & 4 buttons, IR Receiver & Emitter, Light Sensor, Microphone, Gyro+Accelerometer, Micro SD Card, 3.5mm Jack+Speaker and a built-in LiPo battery and charger.

I chose to make this project because...

I originally got a BBC micro:bit from school and loved the prototyping with the 5x5 LED screen. However, the screen didn't display enough information. So, I created my own device; featuring a color LCD, Raspberry Pi Pico W, and numerous I/Os. It's aimed at students like me and schools.

What I found difficult and how I worked it out

The hardest part was my lack of knowledge in electronics and PCB design. I overcame this by researching online to learn PCB design and component integration. The battery charging was particularly challenging due to scarce examples, but I picked up small details and built a working circuit.

Next time, I would...

If I could do it differently, I'd make the device more compact and easier to manufacture. With more time, I'd add features like an RTC clock, NeoPixels for lighting, and an expansion port for additional hardware.
